A singer who was a previous contestant on NBC’s The Voice was shot and killed while performing at an Orlando Concert. Christina Grimmie, 22 had just finished performing Friday evening when a man approached her as she met with fans to sign autographs. The man, whose identity has yet to be released, brandished two guns as he approached Grimmie. After Grimmie was shot, the man was tackled by her brother and eventually shot himself. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Grimmie died hours later after being taken to the hospital in critical condition. Grimmie’s publicist confirmed the death with E! News stating “It is with a heavy heart that we can confirm that Christina has passed and went home to be with the Lord.”

Grimmie had been performing with local punk rock band Before You Exit at The Plaza Live Theater at the time, and was slated to perform in two California events the following week. The family currently has a GoFundMe page to help support the family with funeral costs. In 2014, Grimmie had performed in season 6 of The Voice, under the direction of Adam Levene, placing third.

The story comes amid Florida Supreme Court deciding whether or not the state should change their current laws from a “shall issue” state to an open carry state. Just last week, guns rights groups spoke at the Florida Supreme Court proposing an open carry law with some support by high officials, according to an article published by The Sun-Sentinel. The article states “Florida Carry attorney Eric Friday said the state’s nearly 30-year-old concealed-weapons law violates the U.S. Constitution’s Second Amendment, which he said requires people to be allowed to openly carry guns.” By national standards, Florida is considered a more lenient state when it comes to gun regulation. There was a bill to legalize open carry this year, house bill 163, however, it did not pass

Upon hearing the news or Grimmie’s death   Levine tweeted a photo of the two on Instagram with the caption “I’m sad, shocked and confused. We love you so much Grimmie. We are all praying hard that you can pull through this…this just isn’t fair.”

Originally from the Bay, I was uprooted from my eclectic surroundings and forced to spend my formative years in conservative San Joaquin County (Stockton) after Loma Prieta. Earthquake central couldn't deter me, and in 2010, I relocated to San Francisco. After a year of not being rich or knowing how to code, I moved to Oakland, where my momma and my momma's momma were born. Oakland has changed A LOT from when I was growing up, and I love getting reacquainted with my roots. Like our city's logo, Oakland grounds me, it's where I've rediscovered myself and unleashed my creativity. If I were a tattoo, I'd be eyes on my eyelids so I can snooze the day without anyone noticing (which I do often.) If I were a street in Oakland, I'd be Skyline Blvd, because, the view. Favorite spot in Oakland? I love it all! But I'd have to say Redwood Regional Park...or Raj Indian in Piedmont.
