StyleCrush: Kelvin Davis and Karmenife Paulino.

Wear Your Voice readers have incredible style — and know great style when they see it. Because of this, we’re going to introduce you to some folks with both impeccable taste and big hearts. They may be leaders within the activist sphere, celebrities, artists or just amazing minds with equally amazing style. Some may be familiar, some may be new discoveries, but all give us a great big StyleCrush.

For our first edition of StyleCrush, we introduce Kelvin Davis of the masculine, body-positive fashion blog Notoriously Dapper. We also introduce Karmenife Paulino, a sexual assault survivor known for a viral photo series of her public, anti-rape performance art, called “Reclamation.”

WYV: How do you describe your style?

Kelvin: I would describe my style as confident, dapper and detailed!! I love wearing stable statement pieces like my trusty fedora and an awesome pair of shoes! Style is all about how you exude your confidence in your clothing. 🙂

WYV: What inspired Notoriously Dapper?

Kelvin: A bad shopping trip to Express! I was going in there to try on a red blazer I liked. I tried on a 44R, my true size at the time, and it could barely fit over my shoulders, let alone in my chest and stomach. I remember feeling down and upset about that experience. So I decided to create an outlet for me to help other men with style. My style blog is 100 percent body positive and is for everyone, everybody, every gender and every race! All positive vibes strong. 🙂

WYV: Who are your three StyleCrushes?

Kelvin: Nick Wooster, Nick Wooster and Nick Wooster! Maybe Kanye West too, occasionally!

WYV: Where do you shop?

Kelvin: I shop at a variety of places like Ace Rivington, Frank and Oak, Urban and more. I usually have to get things altered to fit my body and aesthetic!

WYV: How do you wear your voice?

Kelvin: I wear my voice by dressing loud and strong. Everything I stand for is positive and I will scream that from the rooftops!! My voice is strong, colorful and original — just like my style!

WYV: How do you describe your style?

Karmenife: Unique, confident, extraterrestrial, dominant, powerful.

WYV: What inspires you?

Karmenife: I guess my style and overall outlook on life stems from the freedom I had to be creative as a child. My mother used to encourage me to always find creative outlets, something that I will always be grateful for. This is who I am. I am growing. I am powerful. I am learning to love myself more and more in a world that continuously attacks and demonizes bodies, skin, hair and features like mine. I am excited to see how I will continue to grow and change as a person.

WYV: Who are your top StyleCrushes?

Karmenife: FKA Twigs, Rihanna, Erykah Badu, Jimi Hendrix.

WYV: Where do you shop?

Karmenife: I usually do most of my shopping on Etsy. I love the Iconoclasp, RIDETHENOWAVE and C3Clothing etsy shops!

WYV: How do you wear your voice?

Karmenife: I use my fashion sense as an important form of self-expression. I learned a lot about myself and gained so much confidence and freedom from expressing myself through my dress. Most of this is derived from the fact that I have learned to grow more and more comfortable in my own skin. By dressing for me, I wear my voice and push away all the many other voices that try to demonize and attack me for the way I look. Demonize and shame me, because as women we’re told that unless our bodies are displayed for male consumption, then we’re vulgar. We are worthless. I dress for me. I share my own, personal voice when I dress for myself. I am never here to be consumed. I am here to radiate and give life.
