Kanya Sesser is making some serious waves not just in the world of modeling, but society at large with the latest trending news worldwide. What’s so unique about this beautiful model you may still somehow be wondering (if you spent your weekend under a rock I suppose) – she confidently rocks her body, which was born without legs, and clearly makes the statement that it does not limit her abilities!

Kanya was adopted from an orphanage in Thailand at the age of 5 (after being left on the steps of a Buddhist temple) by her parents who brought her to live in Oregon. Now, at 23, Sesser is based out of Los Angeles, reportedly making an average of $1,000 per day as a lingerie model. After beginning her modelling career at 15 by posing for a number of sports brands, including a feature for Billabong, Sesser said she was then scouted by underwear brands ( she has modeled for Volcom, Nike and Rip Curl Girl.)

With a passion to engage in more extreme sports Sesser, hopes to compete in mono-ski competition at the 2018 Winter Paralympics South Korea, and that she never intended to be a model, ‘it just happened’ for her.

Modeling is “something fun” that “shows my story,” Kenya told NY Daily News. “I’m different and that is sexy, I don’t need legs to feel sexy … I love showing people what beauty can look like. These images show my strength. I enjoy making money from it and I love showing people what beauty can look like. These images show my strength.”

Not only do these images show her strength, but so do her clear perseverance and love of life, which she speaks of. A great example of this is her preference for using her skateboard or walking on her hands to get around as opposed to using her wheelchair.

As for her life as a model and the myriad of photos she produces: “I like expressing myself in a different way than people usually see,” she went on to explain to the NY Daily News. “This is just who I am.”

Now, others living without legs are encouraged to participate in the hashtag campaign sparked by this empowering example of self-love: #NoLegsNoLimit. We greatly appreciate that this can include all people sharing Kanya’s experience, not just people who still exude societally traditional beauty ideals. Here’s one inspiring example below:

Being raised in New England, the west coast has always felt like a breath of progressive, laid-back, open-minded, fashion-forward air to my free-spirited soul, which is what drew me to California. Escaping the more cookie-cutter traditional white picket fence life, has led me on an adventurous journey toward self-love and acceptance, and ultimately body positivity! I am in Oakland, because I moved to the Bay Area for graduate school to become a licensed Somatic Psychotherapist, and after exploring different city options, I discovered that the eclectic, unique, and honest vibe of Oakland resonated with my funky spirit and style! My role in WYV as Senior Columnist is producing weekly articles on Body Positive Fashion, Fat Acceptance, and many of my other passions such as social justice, childcare, and chronic illness advocacy. Of course I'm constantly being inspired by my very diverse (fashionably and otherwise) Oakland peers, local business owners, and fat/body positive activists!
