Music Monday, 12/19: Happy Holidays! Featuring Y La Bamba, Big Freedia, Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings, and El Vez.

Ho, Ho, Ho! If you are like us, you are sick of getting inundated by completely banal Christmas music. Fear not: we have come to the rescue with a playlist to satisfy even the biggest of Grinches this year!

We’ve got tunes from Y La Bamba, Big Freedia, Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings, El Vez, TLC, Dragonette, Run D.M.C., LCD Soundsystem and many more! There’s something for everyone on this incredibly eclectic, extra-long playlist to satisfy your holiday needs.

Big Freedia

This year Big Freedia released an amazing jingle bounce album titled “Christmazz.” Since there are no videos from it, we’re featuring her amazing 2015 collaboration with RuPaul. The Queen of Bounce meets the Queen of Face in “Jingle Dem Bells,” with a bit of help from Ellis Miah, too.

Sharon Jones

This year we lost the incomparable Sharon Jones, a brilliant soul singer and the voice of the Dap-Kings. Jones laid down her sword in the long battle against cancer only last month, which also marked a year since her band’s amazingly uplifting 2015 holiday album. We honor Jones once more by featuring her with the Dap-Kings multiple times in this year’s holiday mix.

Fun Videos and Rarities

The fun thing about Christmas songs is that they are often released as B-sides, live recordings and limited releases, so they are not always available through mainstream sources. Fear not! We have found some gems and want to share them with you right here, even though they’re unavailable through the Spotify playlist. Check out these great hard-to-find songs along with some more mainstream videos that are just too fun not to include!
