Here’s Why Racist, Conservative Troll Milo Yiannopolous’ Twitter Was Finally Shut Down

Leslie Jones, comedic star of the recent Ghostbusters reboot has been the target of racist, misogynist trolls everywhere — particularly online. On Twitter, those attacks have been led by none other than one of the leading pop culture conservative politicos, Milo Yiannopolous, known mononymously as Milo.

Milo paints himself as the champion of the “alt-right” movement. The movement has emerged in recent years among men’s rights advocates, neo-Nazis, “race realists,” technocrats and self-loathing gay conservatives. According to Tablet (in an article with a very troublingly racist title of its own), many of his strongest followers write for racist, anti-semitic publications like VDARE and American Renaissance, which Milo has described as “dangerously bright.” He only identifies with his half-Jewish matrilineal heritage when his followers are called anti-semites and discusses his desire for “Black dick” when called a racist, ignoring the fact that the fetishization of Black men and women does not absolve a person of racism — it’s actually part of racism.

He refers to Trump as “Daddy” to get a rise out of his audience and claims that when people alienate him and speak against Trump, they hurt their numbers. “Unlike most right-wing writers, my biggest demographic is 18- to 34-year-olds,” Milo explains, which is exactly how he was able to get his social footing during Gamergate, the dangerous attack against women in the videogame world.

In short, Milo, the self-proclaimed “dangerous faggot,” is concerning because he has his finger on the pulse of young, angry, conservative America. This is the same man who, on his “Dangerous Faggot” tour across college campuses, spouted that “feminism is cancer.”

Even the Libertarians at The Daily Beast, supporters of Young Americans for Liberty, think that he is a dangerous racist who “opens windows” that should not be opened. Jack Hunter says of the conservative figure, “Despite Yiannopoulos’s promotion of cultural libertarianism — a much-needed call for freer speech, which I agree with — the heart of alt-right tribalism leads to something that is definitively anti-libertarian and functionally authoritarian. The alt-right is characterized by an extreme collectivism that is unavoidably racist.”

The Greek-British “journalist” reviewed the Paul Feig-helmed Ghostbusters reboot for neo-con rag, Breitbart. In his review, he said that Jones’ performance was … “worthy of a minstrel show.”

Actress Leslie Jones then began receiving tweets like these:

Jack Dorsey, the CEO of Twitter, finally stepped in to protect Jones and ended up banning Milo permanently. In response to the — ban minutes before his Gays For Trump rally — Milo said:

“With the cowardly suspension of my account, Twitter has confirmed itself as a safe space for Muslim terrorists and Black Lives Matter extremists, but a no-go zone for conservatives.”

“Like all acts of the totalitarian regressive left, this will blow up in their faces, netting me more adoring fans. We’re winning the culture war, and Twitter just shot themselves in the foot.”

“This is the end for Twitter. Anyone who cares about free speech has been sent a clear message: you’re not welcome on Twitter.”

Dorsey and Twitter responded to the comments in a statement released to the press, featured on People‘s website. “People should be able to express diverse opinions and beliefs on Twitter,” the statement read. “But no one deserves to be subjected to targeted abuse online, and our rules prohibit inciting or engaging in the targeted abuse or harassment of others. Over the past 48 hours in particular, we’ve seen an uptick in the number of accounts violating these policies and have taken enforcement actions against these accounts, ranging from warnings that also require the deletion of Tweets violating our policies to permanent suspension.”

It continued, “We know many people believe we have not done enough to curb this type of behavior on Twitter. We agree. We are continuing to invest heavily in improving our tools and enforcement systems to better allow us to identify and take faster action on abuse as it’s happening and prevent repeat offenders.”
