Actress Andrea Lewis is no show-biz novice. This incredible talent made her debut on Canadian television; if she looks familiar, it’s because you probably grew up with her character Hazel on the teen soap Degrassi, alongside famous Degrassi alum and on-screen boyfriend Drake. Lewis was also part of the critically-acclaimed Down In The Delta with Wesley Snipes and Maya Angelou. And she has taken the stage with the Broadway adaptations of Hairspray and Dream Girls, among other amazing roles.
Currently, she is on one of the best web-based television shows, Black Actress, playing the lead character, Kori Bailey. Black Actress is part of Lewis’ Jungle Wild production company, focused on diversifying media by producing a new generation of entertainment that spotlights women, queer and BIPOC identities.
Lewis is a proponent of body positivity. You can follow her on YouTube with her #SelfLoveSaturday series and vlog, as well as on Black Actress.

Wear Your Voice: How do you describe your style? What informs it?
Andrea Lewis: My style is Celia Cruz meets Grace Kelly. I love patterns, bright colors and anything with an island flair. But at the same time I love classic cuts and very feminine clothing. I truly love an align skirt and a good pair of trousers. My personality is an old soul meets a young artist and my style icons best describe that.
WYV: What inspired you to pursue show business?
AL: I started in entertainment when I was a toddler. My mom was approached by a casting director when she was walking with me in a mall in Toronto and the rest is pretty much history. I started doing “baby modeling” and then commercials and then guest spots on TV and leads and films. I truly love acting, singing, dancing and I was fortunate to have a normal mom and not your typical stage mom. She always made me feel like a regular kid who just happened to be on TV.
WYV: Who are your three top StyleCrushes?
AL: Tracee Ellis Ross, Solange and Blake Lively. Tracee and Solange are my inspiration for bold prints and mixing vintage and modern pieces and Blake is the feminine touch! All of these women wrapped up into one makes my ideal style goddess!
WYV: Where do you shop? What are your favorite brands/designers?
AL: I shop pretty much anywhere, I just love clothes. My go to places are Top Shop, Zara, Urban Outfitters and Anthropologie. But I also love vintage and second-hand clothing stores like Crossroads in Los Angeles or Jet Rag. I’m not big on name brands; I’m more attracted to clothes for the color/pattern/cut than I am for the name.
WYV: What’s your usual hair and beauty routine? Any products that you can’t live without or practices that you recommend to our readers?
AL: I have curly hair, and my hair works best with a “wash-n-go” style, so that’s my usual go-to. My staple products are Mixed Chicks leave-in conditioner and Kinky Curly leave-in conditioner. I use a combo of both of those and they’ve been my products of choice for years. My beauty secret is drinking a lot of water. Water has been my savior for my hair and skin. My beauty goal is always to look just as good without makeup as I do with it.
WYV: How do you wear your voice?
AL: My voice represents “self love.” I wear it everyday by choosing clothes that make me feel good about myself. Whether it’s the color or texture or cut! Bright colors make me happy and when I’m happy, I’m truly my best self and that is a person who loves herself.
