5 Gift Suggestions for that Special Queer in Your Life

No, I’m not just basing these suggestions on things I want. I realize not all queers want first edition copies of Edna St. Vincent Millay books and corgi iPhone cases. Frankly, this list isn’t all that different from any other gift list. Queers like a lot of the same things straight people do. But a lot of Bay Area queers love puppets and acupuncture and flannels and maps and sex. This is not a guarantee that all queers love all those things, but it is a guarantee that all queers love at least one. I love all five! Ok, fine, maybe this list is a little biased. But I have good taste and I give good presents so maybe take my advice.

1. Wondrous Vulva Puppet

You know this beautiful, anatomically correct vulva puppet from Portlandia and your favorite lesbian/feminist blogs. And you can get one of your very own from etsy! Dorrie Lane first created this beautiful puppet in 1993, and you can purchase one directly from the artist, for your favorite vagina-lover. They’re made of velvet and silk and they’re made just over the bridge in San Francisco. Dorrie also does custom vulva puppets. She is clearly a vulva hero and as the resident vulva-loving writer for Wear Your Voice, I salute you, Dorrie!

2. Oakland Acupuncture Project Easy Card

If you read my Minimum Wage Life article about taking care of yourself, you know I am a fan of the Oakland Acupuncture Project (OAP). Everyone you know could benefit from acupuncture, because we all have problems, and acupunctures treats almost everything. OAP is offering a December special on Easy Cards, which are prepaid cards for 5 or 10 treatments. Do you have a dear queer who is stressed or ailing or trying to quit smoking? Or who is whatever? We can all benefit from the welcoming, judgment-free, relaxing atmosphere of OAP. Treat a queer buddy or a straight buddy or yourself to acupuncture in Oakland.

Visit the clinics at 3576 Laurel Ave or 3718 Grand Ave, Suite 1 to purchase Easy Cards.

3. A Collection of Flannels and/or Button-ups from a Local Thrift Store

Queers of all gender identities and presentations love a good flannel or button-up. Hell, everyone likes flannels, from hipsters to hippies. Obviously, you aren’t going to the mall to do your shopping, because you are conscious and shop locally and all that good stuff. So hit up your favorite thrift stores, like Out of the Closet, Crossroads and Buffalo Exchange. You’ll find stylish flannels there, and the gift receiver will be impressed that you thrifted them a gift instead of going to The Gap.

4. A Stainless Steel Cut Map of Oakland

Full disclosure: I ordered one of these for myself last week. I am barely paying my bills right now, but I scraped together $30 the moment I found out stainless steel cut maps of Oakland exist. I can’t wait to hang it on my wall. You can order one for the Oakland lover in your life too! Get maps for everyone in your life, they are available for dozens of cities. The guy who makes them is named Dan and is a self-described “guy with a laser cutter and a passion for cool laser cut things!” How is this gift queer, you ask? It’s not queer, but it’s fabulous, and those adjectives are essentially interchangeable.
