This part two edition of my exploration into the world of #FatshionFebruary, is aimed at representing another perspective on what this radical movement means – as it continues to expand its boarders all-inclusively! The issues of race and gender that I addressed in my first article are relevant here too – creating visibility for individuals of color as well as a spectrum of gender and sexual identities is a very important issue that must continue to be pushed to the forefront of this movement to keep it moving forward (I will also note here that I was unable to find/represent any transgendered individuals participating at this time). It is also important to highlight that as I was unable to receive confirmation of preferred gender pronouns from all five individuals, I only used male pronouns where permissive.

One of the things that I love most about becoming more immersed in the size acceptance community, is that from a simple click of a hashtag, a world of inspiration is at my fingertips. Furthermore, just one photo of an incredible ensemble can then lead me to new viewpoints and forms of activism expressed even further on other forms of social media. The web of connections and support is built this way, which is an intricate element of the Body Positive Fashion World, and a perfect antidote to the poisonous fat shaming that the majority of mainstream media attempts to shove down ones throat!

William is a stylist whose entire aesthetic including this look, is just absolutely EVERYTHING! This individual rocks some serious East Coast style that can be translated globally and it totally makes me want to rock these prints in my own way! William’s goal as described on his Body Positive tumblr page Big Buy Fly: “I’m a personal shopper and stylist for the Big Guy! I wanna show that although difficult sometime (due to the lack of consideration given to the big guy by the fashion industry) it is possible to be Big and stylish!” – We here are Wear Your Voice are glad to have discovered you and your Big Guy Fly movement, William! Keep being an inspiration and representation of revolutionary creativity and boldness!

I did a serious pause and repeat when coming across this gem on my hunt for favorite looks! Michael is OWNING this entire ensemble, and I loved the profile description given; “I am a cosplaying fatshionista sabotaging social perceptions of what men should and shouldn’t wear.” I couldn’t love this sentiment any more, and couldn’t resist checking out more of Michael’s looks on the gender-bending, cheekily-named website this individual created: His Black Dress. Rock the fuck on; keep wearing and blogging your heart on your sleeve!

This self-titled gentleman is seriously dapper, with an ease of charm that seems to shine through every ensemble seen sported on his instagram, as well as his blog: A Gentleman’s World. Michael’s mission:“I aspire to inspire guys of all sizes to dress their best.” We are so glad you exist to shine a light on this important topic, and encourage our readers to check out Mike’s journey and mission as well!

Without sounding creepy (but fully embracing the weird), I seriously feel like this fashionable soul shares a kindredness with mine – I am literally LIVING for this look right now! The all-black-accented-with-gold ensemble is backed by some serious confidence, and makes my Oakland heart shoot a pang of nostalgia for Brooklyn-based fatshionistas, such as Marquis (but really, next time I’m on my east coast home base, we need to have a styling/photo shoot adventure together). His tumblr is a visual delight, which opens with an effervescent photo of Marquis werking a mix of street and ethereal realness, underneath which an aptly heading reads; “Beauty Bear” (recalls to mind the time I went to Provincetown on the wrong weekend but I digress…)! Keep doing YOU – we adore you for it!

Eli is a Fashion Stylist, Creative Director and Writer with some serious accolades featured on his aesthetically pleasing fashion site – this stylish individual seems to be werkin’ it from all angles (all while serving some serious ensembles of their own). I originally found Eli through a #FatshionFebruary courtesy of our new favorite “Big Guy Fly” William, and as a fellow creative couldn’t be more happy to have done so! We really appreciate the fresh perspective you bring to the fashion world, Eli, and look forward to seeing more of your personal looks and professional work in the future!

Being raised in New England, the west coast has always felt like a breath of progressive, laid-back, open-minded, fashion-forward air to my free-spirited soul, which is what drew me to California. Escaping the more cookie-cutter traditional white picket fence life, has led me on an adventurous journey toward self-love and acceptance, and ultimately body positivity! I am in Oakland, because I moved to the Bay Area for graduate school to become a licensed Somatic Psychotherapist, and after exploring different city options, I discovered that the eclectic, unique, and honest vibe of Oakland resonated with my funky spirit and style! My role in WYV as Senior Columnist is producing weekly articles on Body Positive Fashion, Fat Acceptance, and many of my other passions such as social justice, childcare, and chronic illness advocacy. Of course I'm constantly being inspired by my very diverse (fashionably and otherwise) Oakland peers, local business owners, and fat/body positive activists!
