As we transition into August with summer still in full swing, it has become crystal clear that our body positive movement #DropTheTowel is here to stay…all year-round! Wear Your Voice has reached out to our readers, and the world reached back – our entire team couldn’t be any more honored that the resonance of this work is global. It serves as an important reminder of the truth we are constantly stating: ALL BODIES deserve to love and be loved without judgement.

Blogger and Actress Erica Watson verbalized an important part of our vision best in a recent interview on HLN’s The Daily Share when asked how she felt about it highlighting not just all different shapes and sizes, but “highlighting womyn of different colors as well”: “I’m very excited about that because the real truth of the matter is a lot of these social media campaigns do not really embrace diversity. It’s typically about white womyn sizes 8 to 12 feeling good about themselves; I’m just gonna keep it real. So to have a campaign that shows…Black womyn and Latina womyn have been leading the forefront when it comes to embracing curves and loving their bodies, but we are often left out of the discussion when it comes to mass media…” At this point the interviewer interjected; “Well not anymore, Erica, because we are talking about it right here!”

Let’s not forget that love starts with the self, and after personally taking some time to explore #DropTheTowel on Instagram, I could see that the posts being made were infused with self-love. The following ‘grams’ are far more than ‘insta’ I would say – they represent the courage to do exactly what society is screaming at you not to, which has been a lifetime journey for most. I’m blown away at how beautiful from the inside out your light shines as it jumps through the screen and touches everyone lucky enough to behold such a stunning sight!

As a size 16 mother of two with lots of imperfections. Mummy tummy, stretch marks, cellulite… Yep I have it. I've never been one to share photos of my body. However, in the past 2 years during my journey as a #plussizemodel I have learnt to love my body flaws and all. It saddens me to see people body shaming others no matter what size they are. Beauty has no blueprint and so long as you are #healthy and truly happy with you,who are they to judge? It's important you are mentally in a good place also and I know people of all sizes who are unable to deal with what they see when they look in the mirror. Life really is wasted when you hate yourself. Times are changing! I will not conform to what society says is 'normal'. I urge you to do the same. This is why I'm posting this photo. You can call me fat, obese, disgusting, unhealthy but I'm HAPPY and no words will change that. I will continue to use my platform to promote living a healthy lifestyle… Mind, body and soul. #be you. @gemmacollins1 @kat_v_henry @wearyourvoicemag @simplybeuk @asos_studio @curvykate @slinkmagazine @iamleyahshanks #honormycurves #mentor #mscurvaceousuk #wearethethey #beautyhasnoblueprint #curvy#celebratemysize#makemeacurvemodel #whynotplus #mcukmodel #simplybeneedsme #love #inspire #curvaconfidence #effyourbeautystandards #curveit2016 #ukpsfw #dropthetowel #teamcurvee #tbcr

because last night's sunset swim was everything to me – as is the ability to see myself in last year's swimsuit with a whole new perception of my own beauty. for the first time in my life I am able to fully see, honor and love my whole-bodied reflection. for most of my life my face and body have been living different existences – one being constantly praised for its traditional conceptions of beauty while the other was ignored, bullied, belittled, or kept hidden. even taking this photo a year ago I most likely would have cropped my thighs & belly right out. this is for all those girls growing up who heard the phrase "you have such a pretty face" & would fill in the subsequent line in their own minds: "…but your body is too fat." this is also for the girls who were never told that. I'm proclaiming it now, because the type of beauty I believe in is not on the same par as societal norms – to me it means you've bravely let your soul shine through! #DropTheTowel #FuckFatPhobia #effyourbeautystandards #WearYourVoice #honormycurves #goldenconfidence #losehatenotweight #curvesreign #radicalbodylove #bigandblunt #selflovingyogis

Being raised in New England, the west coast has always felt like a breath of progressive, laid-back, open-minded, fashion-forward air to my free-spirited soul, which is what drew me to California. Escaping the more cookie-cutter traditional white picket fence life, has led me on an adventurous journey toward self-love and acceptance, and ultimately body positivity! I am in Oakland, because I moved to the Bay Area for graduate school to become a licensed Somatic Psychotherapist, and after exploring different city options, I discovered that the eclectic, unique, and honest vibe of Oakland resonated with my funky spirit and style! My role in WYV as Senior Columnist is producing weekly articles on Body Positive Fashion, Fat Acceptance, and many of my other passions such as social justice, childcare, and chronic illness advocacy. Of course I'm constantly being inspired by my very diverse (fashionably and otherwise) Oakland peers, local business owners, and fat/body positive activists!
